Fornace

Opening times:
• from January 2022 to December 2025, from Monday to Sunday

Country where mining and art history dominate among churches and noble castles

Fornace is one of the cornerstones of porphyry extraction and processing: the mining industry is the main source of the municipality's income and originates in the past with the arrival of the "canopi" (German miners) and with the extraction of silver from Monte Calisio. It is assumed that the name of the town originates from this ancient activity: "Fornas" (furnaces) would indicate the furnaces for melting silver.
The area offers the opportunity for pleasant walks and excursions. Among these is the town of Pian del Gacc with the Gnome Trail.
Near the hamlet of S. Stefano, isolated among the fields, there is the ancient church of the same name. It was dedicated to St. Cyprian, bishop of Carthage and martyr, and its origins probably date back to between 500 and 600 AD.
The church of San Martino and the Castello di Fornace dominate the centre of Fornace. In 1462, Giacomo di Roccabruna started building the castle, which was then continued in 1566 by his great grandsons who rebuilt the structure in the renaissance style.
